Sudanese cookie making!
Here in Sudan, most people do not have “cookies” and do not know how to make them!
When I suggested this project to the children, the adults were all wanted to help too–cause they had not done it!
Here are some pictures of Grace and the children around the table preparing the dough for baking in our charcoal oven. When the two older girls, Mercy and Peace, went to help me with the oven, Little Linda crawled up on the table and cleaned out the bowl!
Harvest Time!
We awakened to an unusual amount of excited children’s voices this morning. They lined our fence with cups and water bottles pointing and grabbing at the flying “white ants”. We soon realized our security light had attracted the termites in droves and the ground in front of our two bedrooms out back was carpeted with the white winged insects. This often happens after a good soaking rain like we had yesterday. The ants are considered a delicacy by the Africans and are highly sought after. Unfortunately for the eager children, the fence was too far from the light for them to get more than a few.
We unlocked the gate and the children squealed with delight as they filled their containers with the creatures. Pop off the wings, fry them in peanut oil and happy snacking.
